Findlater sits about 75 kilometres northwest of Regina on Highway 11, roughly 15 kilometres from Chamberlain. It was incorporated as a village on September 27, 1911.
The community's name comes with a story. The original settlers were actually looking for the neighbouring community of Chamberlain, but weariness among the tribesmen led them to stop and rest at this spot. They settled in quickly and built basic amenities, even as the tribe leaders promised they would soon move on and "find the new village." As months passed, anyone who asked about the new community got the same answer: "We'll find it later," or simply, "findlater." After a year the settlement was well established, and the name had been adopted fondly in honour of the promised community that had brought people there. Some people believe, wrongly, that the name comes from Findlater Castle in Banffshire, Scotland.
On January 1, 2022, Findlater gave up its village status and became a special service area within the Rural Municipality of Dufferin No. 190. The community is the birthplace of Joy Coghill (1926–2017), an actor, director and writer who was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.
